چکیده

In this paper we discuss the lifetime of an battery powered device which acts as a gateway between a wireless sensor network and a standard network. The wireless communication standards used are IEEE802.15.4 and IEEE802.11g. The two parameters which are of utmost importance but also contradicting each other are communication delay and lifetime of the gateway node. Our results clearly show that duty cycling i.e. switching o the gateway node improves its lifetime. Depending on the radio modules used the lifetime can be increased from seven hours up to 3 months using only 3 AA batteries. Our results also proove that prolonging the sleep intervals beyond a certain limit (about 10 seconds for a typical WLAN PC card) does not longer improve the lifetime but only worsens the delay.

Understanding a Broadcast Service in Low Duty-Cycle Wireless Sensor Network

In low-duty-cycle networks, sensors stay dormant most of time to save their energy and wake up based on their needs. Such a technique, while prolonging the network lifetime, sets excessive challenges for efficient broadcast within the network. Broadcast service is widely used during the life time of a wireless sensor network (WSN), such as networking setup, data collection/storage and query ans...

A JOINT DUTY CYCLE SCHEDULING AND ENERGY AWARE ROUTING APPROACH BASED ON EVOLUTIONARY GAME FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

Network throughput and energy conservation are two conflicting important performance metrics for wireless sensor networks. Since these two objectives are in conflict with each other, it is difficult to achieve them simultaneously. In this paper, a joint duty cycle scheduling and energy aware routing approach is proposed based on evolutionary game theory which is called DREG. Making a trade-off ...

MERLIN: Cross-layer integration of MAC and routing for low duty-cycle sensor networks

Sensor network MAC protocols typically sacrifice packet latency to achieve energy efficiency. Such delays may well increase due to routing protocol operation. For this reason it is imperative that we attempt to quantify the end-to-end delay and energy consumption when jointly using low duty cycle MAC and routing protocols. In this paper, we present a comprehensive evaluation of MERLIN (MAC and ...

LB-MAC: A Lifetime-Balanced MAC Protocol for Sensor Networks

This paper presents LB-MAC, a new MAC protocol for asynchronous, duty cycle sensor networks. Different from existing sensor network MAC protocols that usually focus on reducing energy consumption and extending lifetime of individual sensor nodes, LB-MAC aims at prolonging the network lifetime through balancing the nodal lifetime between neighboring sensors. LB-MAC is lightweight and scalable as...

EE-RI-MAC: An energy-efficient receiver-initiated asynchronous duty cycle MAC protocol for dynamic traffic loads in wireless sensor networks

Introducing duty cycling in the MAC protocol used in wireless sensor networks has been proven to be an efficient way of prolonging the battery lifetime of the sensor nodes because idle listening is a high energy consumption factor. This concept has been proven efficient in the existing energy-efficient MAC protocols, including receiver-initiated MAC (RI-MAC). In this paper, we further enhance t...
